Surface Planer
1. Be sure to have the instructor’s approval before operating the machine.
2. Check all materials for knots, splits, metal particles, and other imperfections. Remove them before you plane the material.
3. Scrape all glue off the stock before running it through the planer.
4. Adjust the machine to the correct thickness of cut before turning on the power.
5. Stock should be at least 12” inches long, or several longer than the distance between the centers of the feed rollers.
6. Do not force material into the planer. Do not lower the table when a piece if material is between the rollers.
7. Plane with the grain, or at a slight angle with the grain. Never attempt to plane across the grain.
8. Stand to one side of the work being fed through the machine in case of kickback.
9. Do not look into the throat of the planer while it is running.
10. Do not feed stock of different thicknesses side by side through the machine, unless it is equipped with a sectional infeed roll.
11. Handle and hold the stock only in an area beyond the ends of the table.
12. If the machine is not working properly, shut off the power at once and inform the instructor.
