Measuring in Industry
A single apostrophe (‘) following a number means the measurement is in feet.
A double apostrophe (“) following a number means the measurement is in inches.

Reading a Ruler – count the lines then reduce the fraction to its lowest form
The larger the unit of measure the longer the line will be on the ruler or tape measure
Full inches (1”) are the longest followed by increments of half inches (1/2"), quarter inches (1/4”) the eighth inches (1/8”)
The marking normally on the top left corner of the ruler or tape measure will tell you the units each line represents, most commonly 1/8”.
*you can only reduce the fraction when both the numerator and the denominator are even
(EX.) If the units are 1/8” of an inch increments and 6 out of 8 lines in use is equal to 6/8” which is the same as 3/4"
